In almost all cases the maker of the camera will work best with lenses from the same maker. However to save money you can still get good results from other makers. Since Nikon has been around for quite a while, there are many OTHER makers, and many OLDER lenses too. Older Nikons, used a SCREW motor, I have a D50 which uses a screw motor, but can also accept SWM(lense with built in Silent Wave Motor). This affects the way the Auto-Focus of a lens is operated. So if you accidentally buy an OLDER lens with a SCREW motor connection it will NOT operate auto-focus unless the camera actually has a screw motor. The D5200 does not have a screw motor, so any lens you buy must have a built-in motor(SWM).In some cases the SWM may have a different trade name(eg USM, USD).So it depends what the following identifying letters are on the lens, as there are old versions of a tamron 18-200 and new versions of it. If the lens is NEW then it most certainly will have a buil-in motor of some kind. Lastly the same elns may be made with different fittings, to attach to different makes of camera, so for that tamron lens it may be available to fit CANON.NIKON or other cameras. The two fittings are DIFFERENT and you will need a NIKON fit lens.

The nikon lens will always be better. However, 70-300 is too extreme. Absolute max zoom should be 3x, like 70-210. 2x would be better. In life, you don't get something for nothing. Bigger zoom range = poorer picture quality, ALWAYS

I can see why you may be confused.

You need to be comparing the Nikkor AF-S 18-200 mm lens against the Tamron lens of the same focal length or compare the Tamron version of the 70-300 mm lens against the Nikkor version.

Which lens you buy must be the one that fits your needs as a photographer based upon the subjects you tend to shoot and 2) your budget

Optically-wise, the 70-300mm is better because of the shorter zoom range. In terms of flexibility, however, the 18-200mm has more uses due to the longer zoom range.

Tamron 18-250, 18-270 and 16-300 are better than their 18-200. But these long zooms are so dark at the telephoto end.

Stick with Nikon 70-300 at that level as there are too many potentially annoying compatibility issues.

If you will be near the front at a festival then you will still need your 18-55mm kit lens or similar.
