Hi, I bought a Nikon 5100 camera recently and I have adobe photoshop 7.0 because i had the disk for it and i didn't want to buy the new ones. Photoshop can open up images just fine but when i try to open up the images from this nikon camera just a blank screen opens up but with no image on it. If anyone knows what's wrong and how i can fix it please answer. And btw i don't have any plugins or anything i'm sort of a begginer with photoshop i used another program before it.

Photoshop 7.0 was made in like 2003?

wasn't built for today's camera so you need to get around it by the way you are doing.

Do you mean Photoshop Elements 7?

What kind of images are you trying to open? Are they NEF files, if so, you will need the Adobe Camera RAW plugin.

Adobe Camera RAW 5.2 for Elements 7 supports Nikon 5100 NEF files - it's free here: http://www.adobe.com/...ftpID=4219

If you mean Adobe Photoshop 7.0 - released in March 2002 - then it's too old. Don't even know if you can get Camera RAW for it. Even if you could, it's unlikely it would support your camera.

If you need a more up to date version of Photoshop, Get Elements 11 - it's only $119.It comes with Camera RAW 7.1 which supports your camera.

If you don't want to spend any money at all, get GIMP http://www.gimp.org/...w.gimp.org and UFRAW plugin which supports DNG files. Use the free Adobe DNG converter to convert the NEFs to DNG which you can then open in GIMP. Unfortunately the UFRAW plugin doesn't support the D5100 directly so you will need to use the converter.

Adobe DNG converter here: http://www.adobe.com/...rm=Windows

Other applications are also available for free such as RAWTherapee (standalone application, can also be used with GIMP as a plugin). Http://www.rawtherapee.com/?mitem=4&faqid=1 - can't see if it supports your camera, but worth a try since it's free. It certainly supports DNG.

As BK mentions, PS7 is much to old to open NEFs from your model. GIMP definitely outclasses PS7.

Nikon does offer ViewNX software that can be used to convert from NEF to high-quality TIFF or basic-quality JPEG:

You might also find the NEF codec handy for seeing thumbnails in Explorer.

I personally recommend getting Adobe Lightroom, which will definitely help manage your DSLR photo collection, can edit raw format images, and can also convert to PSD or TIFF. You can download a trial here:

Photoshop Elements is also capable of using Adobe Camera Raw, and is less expensive than Lightroom.
