TO BUY, OR NOT TO BUY?

I got into photography in a big way around 12 months ago, and I bought a canon sx30is for £300 later on.
I was very pleased with the camera because of its incredible zoom range (24-840mm), however I soon became bored about 3 weeks ago with the slow responsive time of the camera, because it took ages to zoom and focus.
So I started to look at cheap dslr 's with interchangeable lenses, shuch as the nikon d100. I bought the d100 with a 24-100mm lens for £200, however my parents said it was too close to Christmas so it has gone away for a Christmas present.
When the camera arrived my parents let me use it for an hour, then it had to go away, but I soon realised that the quality wasn't as near as good as my sx30is. The zoom and focus was very good though.
If I'm lucky I might get about £400 for Christmas and I'm tempted to buy a nikon d3100 second hand for around £300 because this is the same quality as my sx30is (near enough) and it has interchangeable lenses. I could buy a lens for about £100 and I would have the perfect camera kit for me.
I'm 14 and I've learnt a lot about cameras, I know apature, ISO, Shutter speed, Depth of field, the works, but i'm not too knowledgeable about lenses.
Should I get the camera? Or save up for other accessories i've been meaning to get for my other camera.
NO B. S Please!

Sounds just what you want… Get it

DO IT

In handling two different cameras you hsave lerned that each has its own strengths and many weaknesses. May I suggest that you drive a few salesmen mad by actually trying several cameras in several shops and seeing whether they suit your purposes. You have had two disappointments, try to avoid a third.

You can get a new Nikon D3100 with a kit lens for your £400.

Before you throw the Nikon D100 away, you might want to look at the results other photographers are getting with it.
There are at least two other things you could invest your £400 in. A class for you and good glass (the lens) for the camera.
And that's no B. S.

The quality of the images you get with the D100 should be far superior to ANY P&S camera.
Here are two shots taken with a D100.

If you can't get great images from the D100, a fine new camera like the D3100 will not make you a better photographer.
Unlike your P&S camera, you will have to learn how to use the fully adjustable dSLR and its light meter.
Here is how that all works.

The D100 is a little old, but the D3100 isn't going to be much better. The 3100 has better ISO performance and has video, and more resolution. If you do shoot in low light a 3100 might be useful, but you're sacrificing an AF motor, and a better build body. Perhaps look at a second hand D90 which is around the same price as a 3100.
