I need a new camera, My Olympus Evolt 520 is just not doing it anymore. I'm becoming a better photographer, but the camera is crippling me. I need a new camera (preferably Nikon, and I hate Canon). I would like an APS-C or CMOS sensor. I'm looking at the D7000 (I would like a D3X or S but good luck affording that). But the problem is, I want to get a 2000 dollar camera at an intermediate level. The problems I'm having with my Olympus is the lack of customizablity. I want to be able to edit the shutter speed and 'f/'. Olympus is a great camera, but I would like to move on to a better more professionall camera. Any suggestions? I'm great with cameras, so if you recommendd one, tell me why.

Added (1). I'm aware that the lens is an important part. But the body is the brains of the operation. The body of the camera also controls the noise. You can't shoot a beautiful picture with a 6MP point and shoot. I know that I want a Nikon, but I would really like to know which body.

The most important part of the camera is the lens and the availability of lenses. The camera body is changed out relatively frequently. Both Canon and Nikon have good lens systems so most people buy one or the other and stick with it.

If you are short of cash (and who isn't) spend your money on the lenses and get a used body. You can always upgrade the body later on.

Of course, it also depends on what kind of pictures you want to take. There are many things that a view camera will do much better than any 35mm.

The Nikon D7000 is a great camera and would be a perfect intermediate camera. It will give you great results even up to high ISO. I would look at the D7000 body and if you want great results don't get the kit lens. Look for a 50mm f/1.4 which is one of the sharpest lenses with a wide open aperture for blurring out backgrounds or shooting in low light. Then look either for a Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 OS or the Nikkor 24-70mm 2.8 for an all around zoom lens. I would avoid a lens that didn't provide an aperture of f/2.8 or wider with great quality if you want to get professional results. For photography, the Nikon D7000 is the best under $1500 currently on the market.

If you are set on a Nikon perhaps try a D90? Its a very good camera. It has the manual settings you desire, and takes wonderful photos. Its also in your price range if you get a good deal on it!
