Wide angle lens for Nikon d5000?

Sorix

I've been told and read that both Nikon 50mm F1.8G AF-S Nikkor Lens and Nikon 50mm F1.4G Af-S Nikkor are wide angle lens.
I've been wondering which one to get. I'm not a professional; photography is a hobby for me. So i don't need something too expensive that I won't use as it deserves, but want to get a wide angle lens. (if any of the two mentioned above are)
I'd mainly use it for landscapes, portraits, and bokeh.
Thank you!

Added (1). Thanks, I felt that those two weren't wide angle lenses but some sites over the internet did categorize it as wide angle, so i got confused:/

I guess i'll save up for a 10-24Mm then!

Where did you get this really BAD information?

On your D5000, those two lenses are medium telephoto lenses used to shoot head and shoulder portraits.

The lens you need would be either the 10-24 mm wide angle zoom or 12-24 mm wide angle lens

The other bad information you have is that a wide angle lens is a portrait lens. It is NOT.

I have the d5000 with the swivel display as well. I got mine with both the 18-55MM lense and the 55 - 200 MM lense. Both lenses you mention are wide angle but cost between $200 and $1, 800. Pretty hefty for a hobby.

You might want to consider a screw on Wide Angle lense attachment. Most store bought d5000's come with the VR 18-55 MM lense which can easily take the less expensive screw on wide angle attachments. You can buy a $18-30 Wide angle lense attachment for this lense off ebay just make sure they come with the adapters.

Whoever told you or wrote that a 50mm lens on your D5000 is a wide angle lens knows less about lenses than I know about brain surgery.

On a 35mm film camera or full-frame DSLR (think Nikon D700 and D3 here) a 50mm lens is considered a "normal" lens because its angle of view approximates that of the human eye. On your D5000 withs its 1.6x "crop factor" a 50mm lens will have the angle of view of a 75mm lens on a 35mm film camera or D700 or D3. On your D5000 a 50mm lens would be a good choice for portraits, not landscapes. The Nikon AF-S DX 10-24mm f3.5-4.5G ED would be an excellent choice for landscapes with your D5000.

Unless you're willing to spend the money for the 10-24mm just use the 18mm end of the lens that came with your camera. Its much wider than a 50mm lens and you can make some really good landscapes with it.

Buy the 50mm f1.8G lens for portraits. Buy a tripod for your landscapes.

50mm lenses were never, and never will be wide. And on your D5000, they act as 85mm lens, even longer.

Anything below like 20mm is really wide. What is too expensive, we don't know.

10-24mm is good, but you have some other alternatives as well.
