I want to use my Nikon D5000 in the studio with flash units. I connect the sync cord to the camera (and flash units) but it doesn't trigger the flash. Could anybody help with what settings i should have my camera on to make it work? Or know of any other reason why it wouldn't doesn't work?

1) set your camera to 1/200th second or less
2) use a wireless trigger like Pocket Wizard (sync cords can be a problem when moving around using the camera, especially when shooting fashion)
3) if you still want to use a sync cord, use the Nikon AS-15 flash sync terminal adapter

On my Nikon D300 there's a setting in the camera to tell it that you want to use these flashes… I think it is commander mode. It should be in your Flash menu. Although I do not use a sync cord… And I use to fire my SB800 and SB900 flashes.
I wish I could be more help with the studio flashes. You can just google your question and should get a good answer.
