What lens to use with my Nikon D90 on a Gigapan?

I have a Nikon D90 and I'm doing a gigapan of the inside of a jewelry store for a website. I don't know what lens I should buy to have a good zoom, but also keep as much as possible in focus. Have any suggestions?

Keeping everything in focus will require a small aperture say f/10 or so and lots of light. Do you have lots of extra lighting? Or are the store windows such that they allow lots of daylight into the store? If not you're going to need light - either slave flash or stand lights because you'll have to get your aperture down.

Any lens out there will do this work. But, without enough extra light, you're going to need something along the lines of a 50mm f/1.8. This will limit you a bit because it's a prime lens that doesn't zoom at all. If you can just do wide shots and stitch them together this may work.

A 50mm f1.8 lens on a DX crop sensor Nikon body is not a 'wide-lens', it becomes an 80mm lens (not that 50mm can be considered wide in the first place… Unless it's mounted to a medium format body).

Sigma 10-20mm f4 lens would give you an effective focal length of 16-32mm… This is wide. Also with a wide-angle lens, Depth Of Field will be less of an issue as wide lenses have, due to the nature of 'physics' HUGE DOF and hyperfocal distance… Even wide-open.
