What Lens for the Nikon D90?

What would be a good lens to go with for the D90. Taking Pictures is just a hobby and i want to first get a lens that would be good for general all around use. Which ones should i look into?

Nikon 18-200

The 18-105 often comes with this camera as a kit. It's a fine beginners lens

Nikon 50mm f/1.8 D.

Nikon's least expensive. It has no distortion, focuses almost instantly, captures a lot of light and it's small and easy to carry. And on the D90's with the APS-C sensor, it allows you to shoot indoors using only natural light.

I have a D90 with 8 different lenses:

Nikon 10.5mm f/2.8 fisheye - specialty lens.
Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 - super-wide landscape and interior lens.
Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5~5.6 - all-in-one walk around lens.
Nikon 40mm f/2.8 macro - lightweight macro-travel lens.
Nikon 50mm f/1.8 - low light and portrait lens.
Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 - sports, action, and portrait lens.
Tokina 100mm f/2.8 macro - main lens for macro use and some portraiture.
Tokina 80-400mm f/4.5~5.6 - wildlife lens.

I listed the function of each lens as to why I have them. This was partly by design, and partly by economic consideration as I'm an amateur, not a professional. Well, I have sold some photos, so I suppose I'm a free-lance professional, but I still consider myself an amateur.

In all cases, I have tried to go with good quality glass, fast lenses, but at a reasonable price. I'll probably be looking for a mid-range f/2.8 zoom next, but that will be awhile as I can only afford one or two lenses a year.

The thing is, lay out a plan on what you want in the next 5 years, and buy lenses rather than upgrade your D90, as you will have lenses for a long time, and good lenses always outperform marginal ones (as well as having good resale).

Then buy one lens at a time as you can afford it. And only after you have all of the lenses you desire, then upgrade your camera body. Fact is, a low-end DSLR with high-end glass will be better in the long run than a high-end DSLR with low-end glass.

Buying the most expensive DSLR they can afford then buying a cheap lens almost as an afterthought is one of the most rookie mistakes often made, and it is common to read about those on this forum.

What's your budget?

There's a 18-105mm, 16-85mm and let's say a 50mm f/1.8G as a prime that will have amazing quality, but no zoom.

The D90 comes with a 18~105mm Kit lens and is for all around use. This lens should be good enough you would realize that you need another lens.

Enjoy. The D90 is a great DSLR.
