What is better, Nikon or Canon?

Right now I have a nikon d5000, but I i'm looking into getting the Canon 5d mark II. I was just wandering if you guys prefer nikon or canon and why. Is the 5d mark 2 a good camera? I can't exceed $3, 000 and I want a full-frame camera professional camera! And what do you think of my photography. Thank you

here is my work - What is better, Nikon or Canon

Added (1). I want a full-frame for the framing reasons. I can't stand not having a full-frame camera because I need to be able to take full body pictures other than portraits. I feel very limited with my camera because it isn't full frame. Now the only question is, should I go with nikon or canon?

It's not about the camera. It's mostly about the glass you put on the camera body. A full-frame sensor is not worth the extra thousands of dollars. Stick to the brand you're used to using. The Nikon D5000 is a very nice camera. Put some good glass in front of it and you're set.

The Canon 5d Mark II runs $2500, body only. The Nikon D700 goes for $2700. One of the differences for you, is that every lens you have currently will work on the D700. If the lens is FX, you're gold. If the lens is DX, you'll find the D700 automatically switching to DX when using that lens.

And here's a comparison.

By the way, rumor has it that Nikon has a couple of new models coming out in a month or so. If that happens, expect the price of the D700 to drop.

On a separate note - I'm extremely impressed with your portrait work. I may have to ask you for some pointers some time.

You don't want it to go over 3000$ but that's the price of just the vbody for a 5D MkII… What are you going to shoot with lens wise?

On a nice body like that, for the type of work you are doing I'd say a 50mm f1.4 or maybe a nice 24-70 f2.8? Well, the 50mm f1.4 is like 400$ and the 24-70 is 1600$+tax so you;ve just blown through your budget and don;t even have a flash yet.

Oh and brands don;t matter… Nikon, Canon… The variations are so small that it's not worth mentioning.

You additional details shows that you have absolutely no idea whatsoever what you are talking about.

However, in answer to your question. Neither is "better". They both have their plus and minus points and it is upto you to decide which you like best.

If you are already using Nikon then stick with them.
I won't go into the reasons you should as it is pretty obvious that you just have more money than photographic knowledge.

IMO, you have to be rich or crazy (or both) to switch camera brands. Normally you will not make a profit off of selling your Nikon gear and then you have to re-buy everything in Canon.

Only you can really answer if it is worth it.

When I was buying a new camera, I wanted full frame. I asked myself if the extra $3, 000 was worth it… And the answer was no. Since, for the majority of my sessions, the only difference between a full frame and an APS-H sensor (1.3x factor) was the framing… If I wanted a 50mm full frame shot, I just needed to use a zoom that could do ~38mm (or a 35mm prime for a 46mm FF equivalent and take a step forward). So for budgetary reasons, I would prefer to use the money saved for more glass.

As far as your photos, as long as you like them then that is all that matters… Just don't expect a FF camera to make it any better (that part is still about your skill/experience and the quality of glass you are using).

EDIT: The choice between a Nikon or a Canon is pure personal preference! I chose Canon for its ergonomics and the menu layout and a fellow photog chose Nikon for the same reasons.
