I too prefer Canon over Nikon. Both of these cameras are entry-level and "starter" DSLRs. It all comes down to the brand you trust to give you a good product. I've owned both Canon and Nikon cameras and based on personal experience and preference, my Canon always gives me photos I'm happier with, and they're a lot more user-friendly, in my opinion. If you search for reviews of both of these cameras online, you can decide for yourself which one seems like the best option for you. They're both relatively similar in price; the Nikon has a larger megapixel count, but in the end it comes down to what you prefer.

Also, just adding this in, but I bought the Canon Rebel T3 as a gift over Nikon's entry-level DSLR options, but that's just me.

On a technical level, the Nikon is better, as it has a slightly more powerful sensor (according to lab tests), can shoot full HD (1080p) video, and fares better in low light (also according to lab tests)

now which one is better for you is a completely different question and comes with a different set of answers. The difference in quality between the Canon Rebel T3 and the Nikon D3100 is negligible to a novice photographer.

Pick whichever feels most comfortable to you.

Both give good results if you enter into the DSLR range you will be buying additional lens for your gear once you do this changing brands becomes an expensive option so have a look at all the lenses flash guns and compare

They are the lowest from both brands, so quality and everything is pretty much the same.

The D3100 has one stop higher max ISO, less noise, 2 more AF points, Full HD vs HD video only and a slightly larger LCD screen.

On paper the NIKON beats the Canon.
14.2 mp vs 12.2
NIKON has ISO 12, 800 the Canon only 6400

NIKON has 2 more AF points

NIKON has Full HD rather than standard.

This doesn't matter.

What matters is what you prefer.
You need to go and try both of these cameras and see such is your liking or choice of Camera. These are the entry level cameras so it doesn't matter which one is best on paper. You just decide wich one suits you the most and that one will be the best.

Hope this helps
