Using Bulb setting on Nikon D5100 to take night photo with wireless remote?
I have a Nikon D5100 that I'm trying to take a long exposure 5-10 minutes with a wireless remote and tripod. How do I do this with the wireless remote? Set to manual, bulb, and then click the wireless remote once to open shutter and again to close? Is that how it works or do I have to buy a remote with a wire?
I believe on the Nikon D5100, if it's set to manual with shutter speed set to bulb: Pressing the IR remote button the first time will open the shutter and it will stay open until you press the remote button for a second time, or thirty seconds has passed - whichever comes FIRST!
So it's a maximum of 30 seconds with the IR remote. If you use a wired remote you should be able to escape that limitation.
The main problem with the ML-L3 infrared remote is that you have to be in front of the camera to use it. The IR sensor is on the front of the camera. You can set a 2 second delay or try standing behind the camera to open the shutter and then close it. According to information found here:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/..._4730.html the maximum exposure is 30 minutes.
Your other choice is the wired MC-DC2 Remote Release Cord.
It might be wise to check in the Owner's Manual for your D5100 for any warnings about extremely long exposures such as you desire causing the sensor to overheat. You can probably find this information here as well: http://www.nikondigitutor.com/eng/d5100/index.html
