Your camera should have come with a Software Disc which contains Nikon View and Nikon Capture NX2 - the latter being the editing software which is specific to Nikon.
The choices for editing software are many but since you are using nikon camera it makes sense to become familiar with their dedicated software, which costs nowt as it comes with the camera, before looking to alternatives. This may take time as I needed over 6 months to become familiar with the Nikon software when I converted from film to digital but the time was well spent as I not only learned about the software but also to identify elements that I had no need of hence did not waste monies purchasing in the short term.
I have been using Nikon cameras - and the associated software - for over 12 years in which time I have only needed alternative software on less than 5 occasions; the main benefit of Nikon software being that it has guaranteed to be backward compatible so that your images can always be handled.
There are plenty of digital photography guide books… Pop into your local library and have a flick through some… I always recommend actually buying one to have around as a reference they can't be beat. A decent guide will introduce you to photography from the beginning and explain how to choose the best camera for 'your' interest… It will also cover everything that you are likely wanting to sample or experiment with as your interest develops and grows… Including computer hardware and editing software.
After experienceing a decent guide… You'll have a much better understanding of how to answer your own questions by doing some simple research… Books were around a long time before the internet… And it constantly surprises me how many questions get asked on this… There was a time when this didn't exist… I wonder what we all did?
