First the Nikon D90's direct Canon competitor is NOT the 550D, but the Canon 50D.

The 550D is in the same entry level (under $1000) range of the Nikon D3100

The technically advanced replacement camera of the D90 will be released in a month or two. I suggest you wait and see what it has to offer before buying any dSLR camera

Here are how the Nikon D90 and Canon 550D camera sensors performances compare

Fhotoace is, I believe, slightly wrong. I expect the D90's successor to be announced next week.

I would not let that bother me. The D90 is still an impressive camera and it's now at an attractive price point, after all you are now comparing it with a 550d and that is a class lower.

To expand upon the two other answers:

Yes, a successor of the D90 is likely to be announced very soon, but it'll likely come at a price nearly twice of what the D90 costs now, for that's where the D90 originally started out as well.

So if the D90 is at the upper end of the sum of money you're willing to spend, its successor likely will exceed that sum. It may be worth waiting though, perhaps Nikon has changed its strategy and may position it just slightly above the D90, price-wise.

That the D90 is frequently compared against the 550D not only indicates that it's positioned at a very attractive price, but also that the 550D is a very good camera that can go toe to toe to a prosumer model. Still, i wouldn't ever trade it for a 550D - the ergonomics is just far better, IMHO. Two dials instead of one, top LCD etc…
