Nikkor 24-85 or 16-85 for DX body?

I have a D5200 and wanted to upgrade to either one of these lenses. Witch one is sharper and has better IQ. My main use is portraits. I have read on a website (slrgear) that a 24-85 on a d7000 is tack-sharp, but 16-85 is said to be pretty sharp too! I'm totally confused?

Generally if you want to cover that range, the classical lens the pros use is 24-70mm f2.8.

Nikkor 16-85 is pretty same as the Nikkor 18-55mm in image quality.
I would recommend going for the 24-85.
Even better or the best option if you wish to spend more is the Nikkor AF-S 24-70mm f2.8, Amazing piece of glass.

It seem whatever the answer we're giving you, you still have no idea about "what you really need". Gain more experience it will be easier for you to make your choice later on.
Sharpness is something and understanding composition & lighting is another thing, without it your sharpness alone won't prevail quality.
In the mean time have fun reading all these reviews, they will answer all your question about IQ and sharpness…
