Is there some sort of OS for Nikon D90 to make time lapses with it?

So I have this camera, Nikon D90 and I want to make time lapses with it. As I know there are two options, recording a 20-minute video and then speeding it up and I'm going to use it for short smooth ones, and the second option is to make a whole lot of photos every 2-5-10 seconds and then put them together in a video. I want to make really long videos, like 7-8 hours and clicking shutter button every minute or so doesn't seem good to me, and I wonder if there's some kind of OS for this camera to make a function like auto-shutter where it will take a photo in every minute, so I can just leave the camera to do all the work and then just grab it and put the photos together

First of all nikon d90 don't have time lapse built in but nikon d5000 has it

for nikon d90 you need a shutter release remote(know the specification before buying) which will help you to take max 100 photo in specific time gap and then do it again but in nikon d5000 you can have 999 photo in specific time gap

after taking photo you can use windows movie maker for a time lapse movie

I don't think the D90 has a built in intervalometer, unlike my D300, but check in the instruction manual for interval timer or intervalometer.

I think Nikon's Camera Control Pro software might have an interval timer function & I think its compatible with the D90 but that means tethering it to a laptop!

I know some people who have got cheap Chinese remotes off of eBay - some work, some don't - you pays your money & you takes your choice!

You don't need an operating system to do that. Too complicated. You're practically overhauling the camera. You only need a finger to press every couple of seconds. Get the right tool for the right job. Get an intervalometer.

Three options, manually shoot a series of pictures (blech), use Nikon Camera Control 2 (free trial and download) or DIYPhotoBits camera control program. The latter two use a USB cable to control the camera, you can then take all the images and stick them together using Windows Movie Maker to make time lapse videos.
