That is what I want to buy for my fiance for Christmas. She has always had a plain digital camera and has really been wanting one of these. Her digital camera broke awhile ago so I was going to get this. She keeps talking about it. So is it worth the money? Would she have a hard time using it if she has only used digital cameras before?
Added (1). Yea I meant a plain old point and shoot type camera. I don't pretend to know what I'm talking about I hate getting my picture taken so therefore I don't care much about cameras lol. I just know this is the particular one that she has been drooling over. She watches tutorials on everything and learns how to do stuff so I bet she would do the same for this camera

It is worth it to a photo enthusiast. But the $600 is just the beginning. Then there are the assortment of lenses. They can run 5x the cost of the camera. I have two Canon digital zoom cameras that both take very good fotos and both together cost less than 600. Another thing to consider is that this is a very large camera. It will also require a camera bag to hold it and all the lenses and the flash attachment. The 18-55 mm lenses that comes with it is a wide angle lens. If she were to want to do any telephoto at all figure another $500 or more. And who doesn't? Nikon makes a terrific all in one digital camera with a zoom lens. The P500 is pretty much the top of the line and costs less than $500. Has a 23mm-850 mm lens included. It too is kind of large but she will not need any other lenses for anything. The S9100 is another option. It is somewhat smaller which means she could probably carry it in her purse easily. You can get this one in bright red. What gal does not like bright red? It is even less expensive. Just wanted you to be aware of all the options and consider all of the facts involved.

This is a strange question: " would she have a hard time using it if she has only used digital cameras before?" The Nikon D3100 IS a digital camera.
Don't worry. The D3100 has a Guide Mode to help her learn how to use the fine camera

It is worth the money if the user knows photography. If not, you will be spending a lot just to get the same quality of pictures you get with a plain point-and-shoot camera.
As a side note, the D3100 is also a digital camera, a digital SLR (or dSLR) to be exact.

This camera meets an amateur photographer needs. It's small and light, with great quality images. Let's me show PROs and CONs for your information:
Pro:
-Better image quality and lower noise at high ISO with the D3100
-MUCH MUCH lighter, which will be nice when traveling
-Larger LCD screen
-11 focus points, including 3D focus which tracks the motion of the subject or camera.
-1080p Video
-14 megapixels
-2nd Generation DSLR
-Quiet, quiet, quiet
Cons:
-No bracketing option. Not a huge deal since I only bracket once a year
-Cannot use my old 50mm 1.8 lens. I knew this before purchasing the camera.
-As of 10/1/2010, Camera RAW for the D3100 is not supported in Photoshop or Lightroom. Need to shoot.jpg + RAW or use Nikon Capture NX2 for RAW files. That should be updated soon, so not a big deal.
-Can hear the lens focusing when recording video.
-No depth of field preview.
-Can't use wireless remote
