Nikon SLR Cameras

Is a Nikon 1 Camera worth the 500-600$ price tag?

I've been looking around for a new camera. I want good quality pictures from a DSLR but I want something compact like point and shoots. Would the Nikon 1 be a good choice?

I personally think that it is high priced and so are the other mirror-less cameras. However that said, I'm wondering if this new breed may spell the end to the common DSLR camera as we know it.
Hopefully the price will come down shortly, But if Nikon follows Canon's procedure on it's Sx line, each succeeding model will be higher priced and what's worse the price of the older model will rise instead going down to clear out stocks. Frustrating, isn't it!

Essentially you pay a bit of a premium for the small size. If that's worth it depends on you./

I think they are grossly overpriced and constitute the classic solution looking for a problem!

The camera body may be compact but the lens isn't. So it won't fit in your pocket and the body is too small to get a decent grip.

I could go on…

Best solution - get a dslr for photography and a cheap point and shoot to slip in your pocket for fun snaps when you don't want to be hampered by the big bilky DSLR.

I generally dislike all of the mirrorless cameras, whether they be the Nikon 1, Sony NEX, or one of the 4/3rds cameras. Compared to DSLRs they are way overpriced in my view.

The only way I could see owning one is if small size is paramount. And even then, when you add a few lenses, they are no longer exactly portable.

You can even consider Sony Compact Interchangeable Lens Camera The NEX-5N does not come with the many dedicated buttons common to dSLRs but it functions well enough given its compact size and limited buttons. The NEX-5N is controlled primarily either through the touch screen, the rear-rotary dials or a combination of both. As someone who shoots primarily on Manual Mode and on Aperture Priority, it was fairly easy to set the camera on this preferred mode.
