D3100 isn't bad, in fast its really good for beginners. But i would recommend the canon t2i. The t3i is not worth the extra $100.

I just bought this camera for starting out with photography for fun. I was surprised how great the quality is! I don't think of myself as a professional however if I did want to start taking more professional shots I have the option of this. Def get it.

It's very amateur friendly and is designed to help an amateur get going with a DSLR. It has an on board assistance program within to help you learn more about what your camera does. For a beginner it's a great choice.
If you want it to carry you through professional work it's not so hot, but it will work in a pinch. Not something you would want to work with professionally every day.

In the entry level category I'd also suggest going with a canon. The d3100 and d5100 series aren't the greatest quality, Awesome family cameras for someone who wants just a little more than a point and shoot. It'll deliver good quality and help you learn, but the canon entry levels are better. The down side of which is that you lose the on board assistance/teaching program

If you mean "will it make my bad shots look good", the answer is no…

you will need to learn the basics of photography, and you'll need to read the manual about how it works, and you'll need to develop your skills…

personally, i would say that a beginner needs to start with a bridge camera… Cut your teeth on that kind of camera… You get a lot of camera for your money and you don't need to worry about spending a fortune on different lenses…
