Is the nikon d3000 slr or the canon eos rebel t3 better?

Going to get one of the two cameras for my girlfriend for christmas. Not the camera expert so just need some opinions and why

The t3i is better than the d3000, but it is tied with the d3100 (d3000 upgrade), and surpassed by the nikon d5100 (still about in the same price range).
I own the d3100, but would give it to the t3i simply because it has an external mic jack if you are serious about video and audio, you have to use an external mic.
check out this website for the full on spec vs spec of these cameras and others.

I will say that it all depends on you, if you're not that great, your photos and videos won't be either. When I had my video reviewed vs a t3i my d3100 came out on top simply for a lack of skill on the other guy's part. Photography is the same way.

The Canon EOS Rebel T3 18-55mm IS II Kit puts the popular Rebel, along with an 18-55mm EF-S lens, in your hands. You'll be shooting from day one with this value-minded kit - going beyond what your point-and-shoot allows, making your creative ideas a reality. Just remember to first charge the included lithium-ion battery and pop in an SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card and you'll be ready to roll. What's more, the T3 can be used with all Canon EF and EF-S lenses - expanding your options throughout the line-up.

Canon EOS Rebel T3 is a GREAT camera for someone like me, who is just moving into digital SLR photography.
