Do you mean the Nikon 70-300mm VR AF-S? Yes, it will autofocus. It is not a DX lens. You can use it on your DX camera, but it is not limited to DX cameras. Nikon makes 55-200mm and 55-300mm lenses that are DX.
The SB-800 and 900 are reputed to be fine flashes, but may have features rarely useful to an amateur. The SB 600 or 700 could be better value for the money. Those are a noticeable step up from the SB 400, which is not bad but has less adjustability and power than you might often find useful.

I don't know there's a 70-300mm DX Nikkor but if there's, it would be compatible with D60. But why not get the 55-300mm DX Nikkor?

All DX lenses are fully compatible with all DX format cameras.

For the flash options, any would do.

No one is going to laugh at you for having the D60, only those who think a camera take pictures and not the photographer. If you're good, you're good, regarding the camera you use.

You might be able to use the manual focus very well, but it's harder to do that with telephoto lenses.

There are two Nikon 70-300's, if you're talking about the one with IF-ED that's around $550, then it is fully compatible. Plus DX stands for the format of your sensor, so it will be alright.
