I'm trying to buy this lens and I'm not sure if its compatible or not. I don't really care if you don't recommend the lens to the camera because there's no focus motor thingy in there. WHat i'm asking is, can i use the lens in the camera?

Yes, you can use the lens on your camera, but as you said, there's no autofocus motor, and therefore you can't use autofocus.

Pretty much all lenses since 1957 from Nikon will fit all Nikon DSLRs

here is a complete compatibility chart

On the Nikon website they give you a list of their cameras and what lenses they can use. It's a great resource: http://imaging.nikon.com/...slr/d5100/

There's two lenses that are often confused. The old 70-300G, prices around $100. That does everything but autofocus on the D5100.IT's a cheap lens and it shows it.

Then there's the new 70-300 VR which autofocusses on the D5100 and is generally a much, much better lens than the old one. It's quite a bit more expensive though.

If the money is too tight for the good 70-300mm VR or the 55-300mm VR, you would be better off getting the 55-200mm VR than the cheap 70-300mm. Even if there's a situation in which 300mm would be nice to have, it won't help you if it is not sharp.
