Is the lens Nikkor AF50mm f/1.8d compatible with Nikon D5100?
I'm planning to buy this lens but I'm not sure if it will fit the bill.
It will work with the D5100, but it will not autofocus with it. I have one of these lenses. Stopped down to about f4.5 it is very sharp, with hardly any distortion or chromatic aberration. However, you would probably be happier with the newer AF-S 50mm f1.8.
An advantage of some of the older style AF-D lenses is that many can be dialed to infinity. On my sample of the 50mm f1.8 the distance scale is off, and the infinity setting is a little past infinity. I have a D90, so that can autofocus with it okay.
It will mount but it will not autofocus.
It is completely compatible with your D5100 if you don't mind manual focusing. If you want auto focus you'll have to buy the more expensive Nikkor AF-S 50mm f1.8 lens.
