Go to Ken Rockwell's site & check his Nikon Lens Compatibility chart.

The AF-S 50mm f/1.4G will work 100% with the D5100
the AF 50mm f/1.4D will not autofocus, but everything else will work.

Not unless you don't mind manually focusing and using a separate light meter AND the lens have been converted to an AI type lens,.

Just stick with Nikkor AF-S lenses.

The Nikkor-S is a beautiful, fully manual lens that won't autofocus with your D5100, or will it meter. It is a classic older Nikkor lens without the electronics to connect to your camera's metering system.

For your D5100, you need a Nikon AF-S lens like these two.

Other Nikon AF and AF-D lenses will meter, but not autofocus.
