I think the motor on my kit lens on the Nikon D40 DSLR Camera has gone, and i wanted to replace my lens. Any recommendations on what to go for?
For now, i want an all rounder kind of lens, to take of architecture and people… I know that because of the D40, it only accepts certain lenses so i'm a bit confused what to go for, but i obviously want an auto focus mode too.

Nikon AF-S 18-200mm lens is the best all-arounder

Architecture and people are two subjects to which more specialised equipment would be better suited. For example for best result in architecture, the Nikkor PC-E 24mm f3.5 is the lens for the job, whilst for people you want the AF-S 85mm f1.8G. The all rounder lens will only serve to frustrate as it will limit your creativity.

For an affordable lens that's a corker, the Tamron 17-50 2.8 is unbeatable. It's available with auto for Nikon (you need for D40).

Why it's great: Sharp. 2.8, that's fast (catches more light), so great for faster shutter to catch action, wider aperture for low light. And set wide great bokeh, or out-of-focus background. And a really useful range, Wide for landscape or street and long enough for portraits.

I feel that zooms that cover a huge range compromise too much on image quality. They seem ideal but never satisfy.

For architechture, you need a Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 lens for wider view of the whole architechture.
For people, I suggest using either a telephoto lens which is 70-200mm f2.8 VRii or you can buy a prime lens which is 50mm 1.4G.

An all around lens would be 18-200 but based on my exposure for that lens, I would say that its really not enough to beat the 70-200mm f2.8:)
