The D3100

I say that because Sony seems to be veering off from their DSLR line to focus on their mirrorless cameras. Also, Nikon has a much larger lens selection and a much bigger lineup, so if you ever decide to upgrade in the future, you can.

DSLR cameras are digital. They have a larger sensor and an interchangable lens system. Normal compact cameras do not have such things

First, Sony isn't "… Veering off from their DSLR cameras in favor of their mirror-less cameras… ". They are, however, working diligently on their DSLR cameras using their Transparent Mirror Technology as evidenced by the SLT A35, SLT A55, SLT A65 and top of the line SLT A77.

These cameras all feature something Nikon and Canon presently lack - full-time continuous auto focus whether you're shooting still pictures or full 1080 HD video. Although Canon and Nikon offer models that allow for auto focus during video they both use contrast-detect auto focus which is slower, causes the auto focus to "hunt" and results in a choppy looking video. During video, the Sony SLT cameras use phase-detect auto focus which is faster, more precise and results in a smoother looking video.

All Sony Alpha and SLT series DSLR cameras use the legacy Minolta Maxxum "A" lens mount which gives you access to more lenses then you'd ever need in addition to the Sony and Zeiss branded lenses in the current Sony catalog. Since Sony wisely placed a focusing motor in all the Alpha and SLT series camera bodies those legacy Maxxum AF lenses will auto focus - and meter - as they should.

Although the Nikon D3100 has excellent backwards lens compatibility, only Nikon AF-S lenses will auto focus on the D3100 because Nikon decided not to include a focusing motor in the camera body. So the D3100 is less expensive to buy initially but its more expensive to add additional lenses to your kit.

Another valuable feature found in the Sony Alpha and SLT series of cameras is Sony has their version of Image Stabilization in the camera body. Thus any lens used, whether it was made yesterday or in 1985, will be an IS lens on a Sony Alpha or SLT DSLR. Canon can't say that and neither can Nikon because they both chose to place their versions of IS in some - but not all - of their lenses. So you pay for their version of IS over and over.

So my suggestion is to take a serious look at the Sony SLT A35, A55 and A65.

DSLR is better than Digital Camera, it produce clearer, sharper and more colorful photo. The price is now cheaper than the past.

Now I suggest you to consider Nikon D5100 16.2 MP DSLR Camera. The D5100 is a much better camera with features worth the extra $300 over the D3100. Having built-in HDR is a big plus for high contrast shots. 1080p video is just as good (if not better) than any dedicated HD camcorder. The higher resolution screen makes it much easier to evaluate shots.

The D3100 is from Nikon, a brand that's been into cameras for much much more. D3100 is the best bang for your buck out right now, with great quality and video!

You also have Canon EOS T3 but it's got a bit less stuf, though is cheaper.

Sony makes good compact cameras, but for a dSLR not even close to Nikon.
Go for D3100
