How to use strobes with Nikon D60 (can't activate camera flash to sync with strobe)?

I'm new to flash photograph so pardon me if this is a retarded question and I do not know anything about lighting, sorry! So I have strobe that I have connected to my D60 with a pocket wizard. When I click the shutter, the strobe doesn't go off. I read up on it and saw that the strobe is to be triggered by sensing the built in camera flash. The only problem though is that when I activate the camera flash, it gets in the way of the hot shoe attachment and since it can't be opened all the way, the flash does not turn on. Is there another way of doing it or am I doing it wrong, or what? Again, sorry if this is a retarded question. Thanks!

Added (1). I'm actually using a hot shoe to hot shoe safe sync by Wein, which is then connected to the strobe light. I know it works because it goes off when I hit the test button on the side of the hot shoe. But when I click the shutter, it doesn't go off. Is there a certain setting I'm supposed to change on the camera? All I did was put the flash into manual mode and put the shooting into manual mode as well.

Added (2). Yes, the light is plugged into the Wein hot shoe to hoe shoe safe sync. It will not flash with the shutter but sometimes will flash while I'm plugging it in. I don't know if this helps, here is the equipment (for all I know, it could be incompatible):
1. Nikon D60
2. Wein Hot Shoe to Hot Shoe Safe Sync
3. Sunpak TR-Pak II

Added (3). I figured it out, thanks "Betty"! I wasn't matching it up properly because I was putting it on wrong.

Wait, are you trying to fir the strobe using a pocket wizard or using your flash? The two systems are different. Some strobes will work with both systems, but not simulatneously.

The pocket wizard are wireless flash triggers. You need a transmitter which goes into the hotshoe of your camera and a receiver which is connected to your strobe.

Slaves strobes activated by flash on the other hand usually work with an in-built system (check the users guide to see if your strobes can do this).

"I'm actually using a hot shoe to hot shoe safe sync by Wein, which is then connected to the strobe light."

you are pardoned, i still don't quite follow you, but i will try to help

the only thing i can think of if i follow you correctly is the contacts on the hot shoe are not sending enough voltage to the trigger for it to fire a signal to the receivers,

so - using a cotton bud polish the hotshoe contacts, also make sure the contacts on the hotshoe and the trigger mate to each other properly - make sure they line up right, make sure the trigger is secure and tight

i'm about for a bit and will check beck, edit in more detail if you like - if i'm making no sense tell me.
