Is my flash a strobe?

I have a flash that I use for my Nikon DSLR. I don't know the voltage and no info could be found on this flash. It's pretty old and I just hope that it doesn't fry my camera or something. How do I know if a flash unit is strobe or not? I mean I assumed a strobe is those big ones in studios but then I've seen pics where it also has a hot shoe that could possibly be mounted on a DSLR so it made me wonder.

My flash is called ProSpec. It's pretty old.

For clarity a strobe is a device that can be set to take cyclical flashes at certain rates.ie: one flash per second up to twenty-four or more per second. These are generally used either by scientists or sometimes by night clubs.

An external flash are used to light still images either as the primary source or as flash fill. The flash units used in studios are actually called studio flash units or systems

As a rule, any photographic accessory or camera that has "Pro" in it's name, isn't. In fact that title seems to be tossed onto generic and poorly made items as a rule.

Googling "prospec flash", revealed little, but I did find a small, nondedicated flash.
1.It won't automatically turn your camera to the required flash-sync speed, you'll need to do it manually.
2.It's a manual flash, so it will require you to also calculate the distance to the subject, then adjust the aperture (f/stop) of your lens for each shot.
3.It appears to be very underpowered and will be little improvement over the built-in flash of your Nikon DSLR.
4.It don't seem to have any bounce or tilt capability, so all you'l get is harsh, direct flash.
5.It's voltage is unknown, so I'd recommend against using it, as it could fry circuitry of your Nikon.
6.It's cheap, so toss it, and get a Nikon SB flash that is designed for the iTTL Nikon Lighting System.

By the way, you're correct is saying that a strobe is usually one of the large, fixed lights used in a studio, but the term "strobe" has been used for on-camera flashes.
