Good lens for nikon d5000? - 1

I just have the 18-55mm lens that came with my camera. I was just wondering if there are sharper lenses around.doest have to be nikon but I need one that has a focusing motor in the lens. Any ideas

If you like that focal range, the 17-55 lens is head and shoulders above the 18-55 kit lens.

If you can deal with a sinlge focal length, then get a prime lens, like a 35mm or 50mm lens. The new 35mm f/1.8 AF-S lens is pretty sharp and has a focus motor of its own.
