External mic for d5100? Lavalier Microphones?

Is it possible to plug a lavalier microphone to Nikon's D5100?
I know that d5100 allows external microphones of 3.5mm jack, but I'm not sure of the technicalities of lavalier mics.

Can someone recommend me a cheap and decent lavalier mic?

First there aren't any that are good and cheap. Cheap means just that and quality is never cheap.

Sennheiser makes some pretty good lavaliere microphones if memory serves but they're not cheap.
Also most of these devices take an AAA battery to operate. If you have a cable to convert the
the audio output from 1/4" to 3.5mm it should work.

However I would suggest this. If you know of a good electronics store in your area perhaps take your camera there, test one of their microphones with your camera and find out how it works.

Lavalier's are usually wireless mic packs, with the person talking wearing the mic and a receiver plugged into the recording device.

There are actually numerous sets that will work with your D5100, although it will take some adapting to do so with most of them.

Below is a decent lavalier mic on amazon by audio technica, I have used it in the past, decent results for the price:

Audio-Technica ATR-35S Lavalier Microphone

You can find it on Amazon for around $23

Not pro quality, but does the job.
