From the manual it doesn't look like there's an audio input, and the built-in microphone is mono. For stereo you'll need separate recording equipment then sync the external audio when you edit on the computer.

Nikon has three different models with "3500" in the model name. There's the D3500 DSLR, and two point-and-shoot cameras the Coolpix 3500 and the S3500. Which of the three do you own?

Actually, now that I looked on dpreview.com, it doesn't matter because none of these models have a stereo mic. This means that you must use an external mic to get stereo sound. Almost everyone who uses a DSLR for video, especially a Nikon which has the worst video performance of any of the major brands, uses an external mic. The internal microphones on DSLRs is pretty bad, so anyone who's even a little concerned with audio must use an external mic and then dub it into the video in post.

You have to use an external audio recorder like one of these: because the D3500 does not have an external mic jack nor does have an external headphone jack. This is why the Nikon D3xxx series of cameras is totally unsuitable for video. Of course for the occasional video of generic stuff the camera is fine. But it sounds like you're beyond that point. If that's the case, then you need to get rid of your Nikon and upgrade to something like a Panasonic GH4/GH5 or a Sony Alpha series. But if you needs are primarily based on video, then skip the digital camera and just get a camcorder. When it comes to video, digital cameras "can" be pretty good. But the cameras in this class are expensive like the Canon 5D Mark III/IV, the Panasonic GH5, and the Sony A9, A7S. All of these models cost thousands, and some still can't do 4K video or 4K video without massively cropping the sensor. Camcorders don't have any of the problems associated with using a still camera for video. They all come with very bright lenses, stabilization, all of the audio ports that you'll need, along with the various features than one needs for video that's commonly left out of digital cameras. Manufacturers like Canon do this to prevent loosing sales in their camcorder division. Sony and Panasonic are the only two brands that aren't doing this which is why they are the two best digital camera brands when it comes to video. However, while this is true, it does not apply to all of their mirrorless cameras; only their top models.

For a fraction of the price of capable digital camera, you can get a 4K camcorder that is far better for video than any digital camera at any price. Here's a link to check out what's on the market
