Do I put my camera in a separate bin at airport security?

I'm travelling tomorrow and I have never traveled with a camera as a carry on before. I have a nikon d3200 that I have in a separate camera bag that holds my lenses and wires for the camera. Do I take the camera out of the camera bag and put it in its own bin?

Nope. When the camera bag goes through the x-ray machine the operator will recognize the camera and lenses for what they are.

They may want to hand inspect it after it has gone through the machine, but usually not.

I carry two digital SLR camera and four lenses with accessories each time I fly.

NOTE: NEVER put your camera gear in checked baggage.

Digital? No problem. Tie the camera bag on to your luggage and make sure you see it enter and go out of the X-ray machine. That means you have to time it properly that once you lay down the bags, you're ready to go through the gate too at the same time.

Film? Keep the camera and film in an easy to open carry on bag then at the X-ray machine, separate on a tray and have it hand inspected. Tell them it's film. Do not pass film (even the loaded camera) through the X-ray machine!

Probably not but the security would guide you accordingly.

It will really depend on the airport and how stringent their security checks are. On a recent trip to America from Manchester via Dublin to JFK, and back, I only had to take one lens out of the bag because it was long, and that was only at Manchester when they asked if there were any large photographic items. Otherwise the bag went though all the machines with all the camera gear in.

Normally, the only special "remove from carry-on luggage" item Security wants separated is a laptop computer or netbook. Not a tablet, not a cell phone, not a camera (dSLR, mirrorless, point and shoot), not a camcorder, not a MP3 player…

Leave the Nikon d3200 in the camera bag and have it go through the scanner. Be aware that you are normally limited to two carry-on bags. In your case, this might be your camera bag and 1 other… Like a roller-bag with your clothing OR a backpack with a computer, etc… No more than 2 total carry-on bags. If you plan to carry-on more than 2 bags, then you will be outside the allowable carry-on limit so you can expect problems when boarding (but not at security).

This assumes you are not traveling using the new "low priced economy" tickets that limit you to one small carry-on… Again, will not be a problem at security, but could be an issue when you board.
