Best Nikkor Portrait Lens?

Grace

I'm in high school and love photography. I have a Nikon D60 and just have the lens that came with it. I'm trying to decide between a zoom lens and a better portrait lens. I love taking my friends out and doing fun photoshoots but I want a better lens with better bokeh and more professional looking photos. My budget is about $500 (it will be a christmas gift) but I want a lens that will make my photos more professional looking. (I specifically love head shots that are really really in focus) see Best Nikkor Portrait Lens

I suggest the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G lens: http://www.nikonusa.com/...F1.4G.html

The Nikon 50mm F1.8G. Though the others say the 1.4g, the 1.8g is actually proven to be a bit sharper and smoother bokeh than the 1.4g. The 1.4g is actually built for speed (it's a bit faster at auto focusing than 1.8g). Because the aperture is so wide on both of theses lenses, you can't see a difference of blown out background. Also, the 1.8g has an aspherical element and the 1.4g doesn't.lastly, the 1.8g is 264 dollars cheaper so you can save the money to get an assecory like a speedlight.

A 50mm f/1.4 lens is perfect for portraits on the D60. The newer AF-S version is a little "smoother" because it has nicely rounded shutter blades and I think it has nine of them. I use the older non-AF-S version and it is great wide open, but you can start to see the shape of the aperture opening (angular) as soon as you stop it down even a single stop. I'm fine with my lens, but I wish I had the newer one. It's within your budget, too.

See this comparison of f/1.4 vs.f/2.8:

I'm sure that someone will suggest the 85 mm f/1.4 lens, but that is better suited for a full frame camera and not so much for portraits on your D60.
