1) learn how to use the camera properly…
2) learn photography basics…
3) sounds like you are new to photography so you don't sound like you have found out about ISO, white balance, shutter speed or aperture…

If you shoot RAW it won't matter. The in camera settings at that point will only affect the image on the back screen after you shoot, which most professionals set according to how they expect to approximately process the photo afterwards. If you know you will convert all your photos that day to black and white for example, then using B&W as your Picture Control setting would give you an idea of how they are coming out. A DSLR camera is a complex beast. Learn the basics through reading or videos. I would say that it takes at least 2 to 3 years of constant practice for photography to be second nature, and that is not implying you become "professional" at it in that time… That's just to not look like an idiot. Becoming "great" takes several years more.

Hmm.gee… Portrait… Nah, that would be too logical I suppose.

The 50 mm f/1.8 lens is just perfect for shooting portraits

Most photographers shoot in RAW and then make any changes necessary in post production

I you make sure that you are lighting the person correctly, there should not be much you will have to do later,

White balance:

Match it to the lighting

Shade = Shade
Overcast = Overcast
Flash = Flash
Incandescent = Incandescent

I did not mention full sun because of the harsh shadows that are cause by such lighting
