A good camera to buy?

I want to buy a new camera but I'm not sure which one is the best. I prefer the brands Canon & Nikon.
( Something like the Nikon D3100 ). Please Help! The camera also needs to be around $200-300.

Considering a Nikon D3100 body-only is maybe $450, minimum, as of this writing, you're SOL. The glass will add hundreds, thousands, or tens of thousands depending on your level of sophistication and needs. Forget it.

At a photography clinic, recently, I took three cameras into the desert for shooting stills. Turned into a bit of an experiment in media, we might say:

1. Nikon D7000 with 18-200VR and 50mm f/1.4 prime.
2. Canon S95
3. The built-in camera on my Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Android) phone.

Oddly enough, some of my better shots were with the pocket Canon and cell phone. Smaller stuff fits into smaller spaces, and is thus easier for unusual compositions.

Bigger ain't always better. DSLRs are great for sports and night shots. Otherwise, meh.

Would thus recommend the S95's successor, the Canon S100. A bit over your budget, but has exceptional f/2.0 glass and takes stupendously good shots for a pocket camera. I've taken my best non-sports work to-date with a stupid $450 S95, not the beaucoup Nikon. The irony is delicious.

Don't think, just go for it. It's the best for its money

Sorry to say you will not get a DSLR camera ( at least not in a good condition ) for $200 - 300. The lowest price DSLR you will get which is actually really good is the Canon EOS Rebel T3.It is the best you can get. Its features are:

- 12.2 MP CMOS sensor and DIGIC 4 Image Processor for high image quality and speed.
- ISO 100 - 6400 for shooting from bright to dim light.
- Improved EOS HD Movie mode with expanded recording and with in-camera video editing options.
- High speed, reliable 9-point AF system utilizing a high precision, f/5.6 cross-type center point.
- Enhanced metering with a 63-zone, Dual-layer metering system for accurate metering between exposures.
