Which is better to buy for the intermediate/ enthusiast photographer? I'm currently using a canon 350d which is showing its age now with the autofocus not working various other hiccups.

Usually it is a poor idea to change camera systems after you pick one.

If there's a compelling reason to move to Nikon, then of course do that, but take your time and decide for a good, logical reason, NOT just because Nikon has a lot of buzz right now.

Visit the Canon website to see what is available there, look on the Nikon website and do the same thing.

Finally visit this website to see how the sensors of your choices compare.

And finally, spend some time visiting a proper camera shop and hold some time holding then in your hands

Yes! Nikon is the best camera brand I have ever used. They take phenomenal non blurry photos and they have so many editing features and possibilities you can do anything. My Nikon have always gotten the warmest, brightest, and most vivid colors of any camera. Their camera also get crisp and sharp photos everytime. I totally recommend Nikon they also have the best warranty of any camera on market. The canon camera gave me blue highlights in a photo while the Nikon got the correct and most realistic colors.

Unless you have a sizable investment in lenses, now would be the best time to upgrade to Nikon.

Canon and Nikon are both equally as good. I suggest getting another canon so you can use the lenses you already have rather than restarting your collection.

If you have not bought any lenses then simply buy another Canon body.

However if you only have the kit lens then your not locked into the Canon brand.

The Canon T3i and T5i are nice cameras. The T4i has been recalled due to firmware issues and problems with the rubber grip turning white and possibly causing skin irritation. The T5i is basically that same thing as the T4i just with a new kit lens and some new gimmicks.

On the Nikon side you have four cameras to choose from. The D3100, D3200 are entry DSLR's like your 350D. However DSLR's have come along way since the 350D. As a result the D3100 and D3200 are packed with features and technology that was only available in pro DSLR's just a couple years ago. Then you have the D5100 and D5200 which just have more bells and whistles. They feature better image sensors and a bit more control. They also have more special effects modes to. The D5200 stands out because its has probably the best specifications of any entry level DSLR right now.

The D5200's AF system in borrowed from the D7000 while its image sensor is similar to that of the new D7100.

If your on a budget then I'd go for the D3100.It can shoot 1080p video. Its image sensor is leaps and bounds better then the old 350D's. Basically the D3100 will outperform any DSLR that was made when the 350D was new. The D3100 with 18-55mm VR kit lens is on sale now for $449 USD.
