Right DSLR Camera for me?

Well, College is next fall, and I want to major in Film to work with Tv networks and on upcoming movies, etc. There are scholarships out there that require me to show pieces of work. Some of my courses in college will require some photography since it's a natural part of film. So why not get a decent camera that can do both pretty good? I'm looking for a DSLR camera that can suit my needs to build a work portfolio that a few colleges will ask for upon applying to their film departments. Any ideas, I'm looking at a Canon t3i 18MP camera that does around 3.7Fps, or I can maybe get a Nikon D5200 with 24.1MP and about 5fps. What would be a good choice or are there any others? The Rebel T3i comes in a bundle with a case, SD card, extra pair of lens for about the same price of the D5200 camera only. About: $800 with tax included.

You can also get a Nikon D3200 which is also a good camera - and a few hundred less than the D5200 - if you are on a budget.

A very good DSLR for a beginner is the Canon T5i. It doesn't cost that much more than the T3i but it has a lot more features & functions which will come in very handy later on as your experience grows. If you are going to use it for videos, then be sure to get the STM lenses for the T5i since the autofocus drive is faster & quieter. I think the kit already comes with the 18-55mm; go buy the 40mm STM, it's an awesome len! Get a battery grip too since video uses alot more battery power, and it'll make the camera more comfortable to hold.

I use the T5i myself and I love it. The August issue of Popular Photography has a very thorough review of this camera and they rated it very highly.

Buy canon… Reason being magic lantern.

Either buy t3i/t4i/t5i or go for full frame 5d/6d.

There's approximately $200 difference in the price of both the cameras, if you purchase without a bundle and obviously there's a difference in the specs of both the cameras too. Both the cameras are pretty good and have reliable performance.
Canon T3i is best among Canon rebels and i personally admire it as well. If you want bundle in the same price, you must go without hesitation because T3i is worth spending camera.
If you are choosing between T3i and D5200, i recommend D5200 only due to its upgraded features, consider the fact its higher price as compared to T3i.
Here is what professionals say about the cam:

Since you are purchasing for a pure professional reason so invest in a better option if you don't have money constraint. Here are some major upgrades if we compare it with T3i:
The D5200 has a slight edge (0.7 f-stops) in low noise, high ISO performance 1, 284 ISO vs 793 ISO
Around 30% better image quality
It has better color depth and distinguishes 2.1 more bits of color
It has 39 focus points so it set focus accurately within the frame
D5200 has in camera HDR which combines multiple exposures to capture high dynamic range
APS-C 23.5x15.6mm vs APS-C 22.3x14.9mm, More than 10% larger sensor
Capture more than 30% more detail in your photos with 24.0MP resolution
Significantly more cross-type focus points and 3X less delay while turning on
It has a video autofocus with contrast detection
Around 40% faster continuous shooting and is much portable
