How to get this camera to charge?

I have a nikon cool pix camera but I can't seem to get the battery to charge. No matter how I put it the charger the red light doesn't change.

Replace the battery.

Mine flashes until it is charged and then is solid. It takes several hours to charge the battery.

Which camera? Try reading the user manual.

Most batteries have a code on them which indicates that date of manufacture. If the battery is 5 years or older, then it's probably dead and needs to be replaced. Most of these batteries don't last for more than about 5 years, but YMMV. Rarely is the problem with the charger.

You either have a bad battery or a bad charger. Most likely, it's the battery. Buy a new one.

My battery is brand new. I don't have the instruction book because I lost it. I need to know how to put the battery into the charger. Like flat or upright.
