What lens for a Nikon D3100?

I've been shooting for a while with the kit lens (an 18-55mm AF-S). I've noticed that it has a bit of difficulty in low light and I could use more zoom. I'm on a really tight budget. Does Nikon make any lenses that are both zoom lenses and good lenses in low lighting?

Yes, but not if you're on a budget.

If you can't work out for yourself which lenses you need, you aren't ready for them.

For low-light you need a fast lens like the AF-S 50mm f1.4G for about $485.00. Since its a prime lens (no zoom) you'll have to zoom with it like we did back before zoom lenses were invented - walk closer to get less of the scene, walk backwards to get more of the scene.

The AF-S 70-200mm f2.8G ED VR II will cost you about $2, 400.00 but does great in low-light and definitely gives you more zoom.

Well the problem you have here is that lenses that are good for low lighting conditions have to be faster in their lighter gathering abilities and it is much more expensive to manufacture a lens with faster light gathering qualities. Therefore you can't be cheap in your search. Yes you want to find out what is available and compare all the lenses and your ability or desire to spend more. The brand name Nikon is among those that have the most quality lenses available, and along with this high quality comes high prices.

I would recommend Nikon's 35mm f/1.8 lens for available light photography and it is a lot more reasonable than I expected price at about a little less than $200.00 @ B&H Photo. New York.

For low light the best thing to buy is a tripod.
