I read that you need a G series nikkor lens for the auto focus for the d300 and d3100. I had been told that the one i named above (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005L… Would work fine with it and bought it THEN read up on it but found little lol. My question is, even if the AF doesn't work can i use the manual focus fine with my nikon d3100? The G series is too expensive anyways and i'm using this for my home studio on a tripod so not too worried about having to use manual if thats the case

You shouldn't have any problems using that lens on your D3100. The lens will communicate with your camera body, too, so you shouldn't have to put the camera into manual mode.

I'm pretty sure you can use any nikon lenses on their cameras, even old film lenses to digital ones. At least some. Most of the time you have to just use manual focusing with them though.

You do not need G, you need AF-S or sigma hsm.
A 50mm f1.8 will do everything your kit lens will do on the d3100 except autofocus. So yes you need to turn the focus ring yourself.
