I read that you need a G series nikkor lens for the auto focus for the d300 and d3100. I had been told that the one i named above (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005LEN4/ would work fine with it and bought it THEN read up on it but found little lol. My question is, even if the AF doesn't work can i use the manual focus fine with my nikon d3100? The G series is too expensive anyways and i'm using this for my home studio on a tripod so not too worried about having to use manual if thats the case

The beauty of Nikon is that they all have the same mount and have been using it ever since 1957. There might be some metering problems, and definitely autofocus problems, but you can still use the lenses.

the lens you mentioned will work, just not autofocus

All G series means is that is does NOT have an aperture ring. This lens is NOT a G series, but you don't care, other than you have to make sure the aperture ring is always in 22 so you can control the aperture with the camera body.

Your manual has a lens compatibility chart. Download your manual from here

Yes, you can use the manual focus on your D3100.

It will work fine with the D3100 except that it won't autofocus. Does that matter? Well, it can sometimes make self portraits difficult.
