I'm a college student and I want to be a sports photographer?

Right now I have a Nikon D7000 and Tamron 70-300mm lens. I tried to get in with the pro's at last Sunday's soccer game of Orlando vs L.A. But they didn't let me in close to the field because I didn't have press credentials. So next I decided to go to local high school's football games, but didn't know how to find out about when the seasons start and other details. If High Schools wouldn't let me in, would college games mind me taking photographs from the sidelines? Tell me what you think I should do because I really need to get my foot in.

Join the student newspaper or the yearbook staff at your college. That should be obvious.

It's very unlikely that even small colleges would allow you to be on the sideline during a football game. Beyond that, if you're attending night games, your equipment is nearly worthless. I shot one game (high school stadium) where I was at ISO 24000 @ 1/500 using a f2.8 lens. If I was using an f5.6 lens it would have been pointless.

Student media is very likely your best option and they will likely have their own equipment as well.

I started shooting sports when I was attending the uni and was working as a staff photographer for the school paper.

I shot high school and college games, however, the sports agency issues me my credentials and I use them to apply for full year school athletics medial passes. Each photographer and writer also have a local agency check, the same one teachers have to have before they are hired by school districts.

The camera you have is certainly capable of shooting sports and action in full sun. The problem will arise when you need to shoot indoors or at night under the lights. For that you will need a telephoto lens that has an aperture of f/2.8

Here are two samples, one shot under the lights and one indoors
