I would say go with canon. They make very good cameras. I just bought one today. If you do get a canon camera make sure that it has a CMOS sensor, because they take awesome pics in low light without a flash. My point and shoot is taking better low light pictures without a flash than a lot of very expensive ones are right now because of its sensor technology.

Rebel T3 or Nikon D3100. Go to your local camear shop, and try 'em both out. Buy whichever one fits in your hands better.

I'm a Nikon guy. The answer is either one. Which ever model feels better in your hands and see which one you can work the menu easier for you.

Id go with nikon d3100 and either a 35mm 1.8 50mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.4 lens
