What are some good books in learning photography?

I'm sort of an amateur photographer and I use a Nikon D5100. I was at B&N just a few days ago and found this book called "The Digital Photography Book" by Scott Kelby and it happens to have good ratings. I want to learn more of photography and I want to see some great books I can check out.

And basic photography text book will help you understand the fundamentals of photography.

You can find good used ones on Amazon and most libraries have a number to pick from.

Just about any book will help. Scott Kelby books tend to be very well regarded.

However, there are lots of other options, as well.

Read your manual! Read it several times, and practice in between. If you don't have a book, download a new one from the manufacturer's website.

Attend a class, visit your local library for some books, read/watch online tutorials.

There are many resources available to us online, some of those provided by the camera manufacturers (and NO, you do NOT need an Olympus camera to learn about general photographic principles just because those hints are on an Olympus websites - Photography is Photography.)
For example:

Understanding at least the basic principles of photography (as well as being familiar with your camera) will enable you to make the most of your gear, and will make a HUGE difference to your images.

Look on Amazon or in any book store. Or go to your local library.
There are literally thousands of photography books published so you have lots to chose from.

The answers so far already cover your question… The library is a great source of decent books.

The three books I use for reference most are 'The 35mm Photographer's Handbook' by Julian Calder and John Garrett… It was recommended to me over 30 years ago and i'd still recommend it to anyone learning photography. 'The Photography Bible' by Daniel Lezano is a good book it's written in an easy to understand way and isn't too technical, it isn't an in depth book it covers every aspect of photography though and if you feel caught out on something the info contained in this book will point you in the right direction. 'The Digital Photographer's Handbook' by Tom Ang is probably my most used reference book… Newcomers might find it a bit technical, the advice in this book is second to none… Just about anything you could possibly want to know is in this book it contains a section at the back with all the contact details of useful companies and organisations associated with photography…

I tend to get approached by people thinking about buying a new camera… If someone seems genuine interested i'll throw one of these three books at them and replace it with the latest edition.

One of the best books I've found so far is "The Art of Exposure." It breaks down the three components of exposure (Lighting, aperture, and ISO), and shows how to use all three to properly expose your pictures.

Well worth the $20 or so it costs.
