The 50mm is a fixed focal length lens, so to frame the subject you have to zoom with your feet. It is capable of a wide maximum aperture (f1.8) though, so will be useful if you want a shallow depth of field and if you are shooting in low light.

The 18-105mm lens is a zoom lens - it goes from a wide angle of view (18mm) to short telephoto (105mm). However, it will be a 'slower' lens - with a smaller maximum aperture (probably something like f3.5-5.6). This means that at 18mm focal length, you can get f3.5 but at 105mm focal length, the widest aperture is only f5.6. This lens will struggle in low light conditions.

As you are a beginner I suggest you get the 18-105mm - it is a multipurpose lens & covers a good range of focal lengths for general photography. I also suggest that you take a photography course & learn about DSLR's and lenses, otherwise you will not get the best from your D90 and you might as well have had a point & shoot.
