Lens for a Nikon D90?

I'm buying a used Nikon D90 body. What is a good lens to begin with? I will mainly be taking outdoor pictures - landscape, nature etc…

The normal kit lens for the D90 is the Nikon AF-S 18-105mm f/3.5~5.6. However, I upgraded that lens on my D90 to a Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8, which is a superior lens. It does not have the zoom range of the 18-105mm but it is faster (f/2.8), sharper, and has better build quality.

I highly recommend buying the 17-50 f/2.8 (or even the NIkon 17-55mm f/2.8 - but it is twice as expensive).

If you need more reach, then add another lens to complement the 17-50.

While there's not a significant difference - probably unnoticeable - between 17mm on the one lens and 18mm on the other, the smaller the number - the better for landscape.

Nature however often means long distances. In that regard, you will want something in the 200 to 300mm range, so both lenses I mentioned above will fall short. That is where I'm recommending a second lens.

The best consumer-grade lens in this regard is the Nikon AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5~5.6. Less expensive 55-200mm and 55-300mm lenses are available but they are not as nice as the 70-300.

Best all purpose everyday lens would be the 18-200mm.
