Can't get filter on NIkon 50mm 1.8 lens?

Can't get filter on NIkon 50mm 1.8 lens?
Added (1). I purchased a 52mm UV and polarizing filter for my 50mm lens, as that was what everything I was reading said would fit. I received the filters today in the mail and they aren't big enough to screw on. What am I doing wrong?

It depends which 50mm f/1.8 you have
the AF Nikkor 50mm 1:1.8 D is a 52mm filter thread
the AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1:1.8 G is a 58mm filter thread

Return it to the seller if they're too small, Look at your lens; it should have the size it will accept printed so you can buy the appropriate one.

On your lens will be a mark that is normally like a "o" with a "/" through it followed by a number. That number is the filter size.
Filter size for Nikon 50mm lenses varies between 52mm and 58mm depending on the specific model.
