Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP SLR Camera OR Nikon D300010.2MP SLR Camera?

I'm a beginner and I'm looking to get a SLR camera. Out of those two which would you say is better for me, being a beginner? If neither, which SLR camera would you find best for me?

Personally i'd suggest an old secondhand manual 35mm SLR, praktica are one of the most popular brands it'll teach you how to take a photo and the intricacies of exposure, shutter speeds f stops etc. If you really have no snobby tendencies i used to love my old zenith, old chunky heavy russian built like a brick and tough as boots.

Have your looked through these cameras and held them. Is one more comfortable than the other? I have been a Canon man all my life. But I found the Canon viewfinder to busy for my tastes. I handled and liked the Pentax Kx camera, and bought it. I also like the fact that the stabilization feature is built into the camera body, rather having to purchase this with each lens. Also older Pentax lenses fit this camera making a good deal very possible.

Actually these are dslr cameras because the term slr refers to film cameras.

That said, I own a Rebel XS among others and it's an excellent camera. But like any dslr it needs to be operated properly to give you the best results. If you don't understand the controls I'd suggest a short course, lots of reading and practice. Because if you operate any dslr on full auto you'd might as well buy a point and shoot.

They are both excellent entry level cameras. Both can produce professional quality images if you are up to the task.

You have to decide which camera system you want to marry for the next few decades. Once you decide, then you will know which to buy
