I've been looking to move up to a DSLR camera (right now I have a more glorified point-and-shoot, the Panasonic Lumix ( http://www.amazon.com/...003WJR694/ )

I've been going back and forth between the Nikon D3100 ( http://www.amazon.com/...003ZYF3LO/ ) and the Canon EOS Rebel T3i (also known as the EOS 600D in Europe). Http://www.amazon.com/Canon-T3i-Processor-3-0-Inch-Vari-Angle/dp/B004J3V90Y/

I'm just wondering if anyone has experience with these cameras and can tell me what they're like, pros/cons, or anything you want to add.

I would mainly be using it for taking more artsy pictures that I can't take with my P&S, and also for some video recording.

Any help would be much appreciated!

The T2i (and newer T3i) compete with the D5100. The D3100 competes with the T3. The D3100 outperforms the T2i, T3i and T3. Go to a local camera shop and try them all out.

In the US, the D3100 is the highest selling DSLR. So if you don't like it, you can probably sell it to someone as it has a good resale due to demand.

But the D3100 is likely to be replaced by the D3200 soon, so you may wish to see what the new camera is like.

There's only one way:

Find a dealer who'll let you handle them and make up your own mind.

Whether you're new to the world of DSLRs, or are a seasoned photographer who wants to try your luck at video, the Canon Rebel T2i is perfect. I've had nothing but great experiences with it so far, and highly recommend to everyone. The camera is very small and light. It is not weather-sealed or as durable as some of the more expensive SLRs, but it doesn't "feel cheap" in my opinion. It features a 3-inch LCD, which also has a very high resolution. It looks lovely! Auto-focus is fast, and I've been very pleased with the quality of the pictures and videos I've taken so far.
