First of all, it's spelled *Canon*… Are you looking for a point and shoot camera? If so, I would recommend that you stick to Canon or Nikon

Nikon and canon are the two top companies and have the best upgrade path toward pro level

Any except Kodak, add Pentax, Panasonic and Olympus to the list too.

It really depends on what your primary use for the camera is, if it's video the Panasonic GH2 is hard to beat, it has all the stills and video functions which does mean you really have to know what your doing to get the best out of it, but there's iA (idiot - sorry, Intelligent Auto) which works pretty well.

Kodak were massive in the old days. They are still a force today, but not with consumer cameras.

The two big hitters are Nikon and Canon. Both have a massive catalogue of cameras & lenses. So many that there are plenty to pick up fairly cheap.

Other notable manufacturers are Olympus, Pentax & Sony.
