Nikon SLR Cameras

Which DSLR cameras have these features?

I'm going to be buying a DSLR for school, and I would like to know which brands and models feature manual focus on the lens as well as a lens based zoom as well. I've played with a Canon and I like that you can adjust the zoom and focus in the lens. I've noticed that some brands like Nikon and Sony have the little knob around the shutter that zooms. Do they also have manual zoom in the lens? Any information or recommendations you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure you had a DSLR in your hands. Really the most basic point about a DSLR lens is that the focussing ring and zoom ring is on the lens! Using a small control on the camera to zoom is something. SUPERZOOMS. That is a compact camera with a huge zoom.

So yes EVERY DSLR USES THE ZOOM AND FOCUS FUNCTION THAT IS ON THE LENS.

I know superzooms do look a bit like DSLR's but trust us they are not.

Not a single dSLR can zoom. No dSLR has that little knob around the shutter release button for zooming. This is both for manual or auto. DSLR, no zoom. That is because the dSLR is just the camera. Zoom if present is in the lens. Remember, the dSLR has in removable lens.

DSLRs can control focus automatically with a half press of the shutter button. All lenses can be focused manually even the autofocus ones. To focus the lens manually, you have to make sure you explicitly switch the dSLR into manual focus mode before turning the focus ring on the lens.

Zooming in the dSLR is done by turning (or pushiing and pulling) the zoom ring on the lens. There's no other way. If the camera you are looking at uses buttons to zoom the lens, it is not a dSLR. Another way to check if the camera is a dSLR or not? Turn it off then look through the viewfinder. If you don't see anything, that's not a dSLR.

The Canon T3i is in, and so far looks very close to a Canon T2i. There's one cool feature that none of the other Canon's have and it's the 3x-10x Zoom feature. The T2i and 60D had something similar but could not perform this while shooting in HD resolution. The Panasonic GH2 already had this feature built in, so it's nice to see Canon stepping up with the same.
